Pamushana Safari Camp
Location: Zimbabwe, Africa
Client: Malilangewe Conservation Trust
One of the first areas of the development for the Malilangwe Master Plan is the Pamushana Safari Camp. Situated within the conservation area, the safari camp is for visitors interested in game viewing. Since the beginning of the project, EcoPlan’s goal was to provide a cultural experience to visitors in a setting that is sensitive to both the environment and to the local people. This is being accomplished by involving local people in all phases of design, including local architects, wildlife experts, game viewing guides, and laborers
The camp consists of six visitor units in the local African vernacular with a staff “village” and administrative components sited nearby. Situated atop one of the area’s highest points, the camp overlooks a lake used by many of the indigenous animal species. All proposed buildings are tucked below the existing tree canopy to minimize visual impact from the outside. In addition, their location on site takes advantage of prevailing breezes while minimizing the amount of solar load.
